Media Studies

Media Studies is increasingly popular and successful in this school. It is a subject which is also growing at college and university levels. It is is an accessible subject which students already have access and knowledge of, through their enjoyment of films, television, radio, music, advertising and the new industries like the internet, Mp3s and mobile phones.
Students are taught to investigate the different industries in a critical and analytical way and debate the consuming habit of a target audience.

Areas of study at all levels are:
Interpreting the media, narratives, genres, institutions, representation, ideology, industries, audiences and advertising.
Students are required to present their knowledge, understanding, interpretation and analysis in written and production work.

Media Studies – Mission Statement

The Media Department at Meopham School has three main aims in respect to the students:

1. That all learners achieve the highest grade they can in the subject.

2. That all learners experience media production in a practical way in order to give them some insight into the working practices of the industry,

3. That all learners develop the skills to analyse media products so that they are aware of the influence the media has on their lives, particularly social and financial.

To do this, we currently offer three courses of study:
  • A BTEC Certificate in Creative Media Production, which is worth the equivalent of 2 GCSE A*-C grades.
  • A Level Media Studies (which can be studied at AS Level for one year or as an A Level over two years).
  • A Level Film Studies (which can be studied at AS Level for one year or as an A Level over two years).
In the last academic year, students achieved:
  • 100% CC-AA* passes in the BTEC Creative Media course with 29% of learners achieving AA*.
  • 100% A-E passes on the AS Media Studies course with 50% of learners achieving A-C grades.
