Win at STEM Challenge

12/06/17

On Friday, six Year 8 and six Year 9 students went to the University of Greenwich Chatham campus to participate in a STEM Challenge day along with 6 other schools.

Each pair of our students formed a group of 4 with another school and they worked together on challenges including; designing an E-Fit of a suspect using software used by the Police; diagnosing patients using sampling techniques and interpreting medical scans; building and racing a Meccano car and programming a Lego robot to navigate through a maze. The day was a fantastic opportunity for students to experience real life applications of Science and explore potential career options of the future.

Students thoroughly enjoyed the day and won a number of prizes. James Ricketts and Dylan Phelps (both Year 8) formed part of the winning team from all schools present. They have progressed to the regional finals against winning teams of other STEM days in the area, and will attend the next event in January.

Prizes were presented by one of the Deputy Lieutenants for Medway, who also gave a short speech. Workshops were run by university students taking STEM subject degrees, and students had the opportunity to ask them questions about university life and higher education.
