Overview of the Subject

Photography gives students the opportunity to explore the creative process using both traditional darkroom and digital means, learning to interrupt the world around them through images.

The Photography A-Level course is broken down into four main Components. In the first year students will explore component 1 “Portfolio” an introduction project that explores the technical aspects of Photography using both traditional dark room and digital methods. The second Component is an “Externally Set Assignment” where students are expected to respond to a chosen theme through a body of work that concludes in a 10 hour controlled examination.

 

In the second year Component 1 is a “Personal Investigation” students will carry out extensive research based on themes in photography and will be expected to write a 2000 word essay related to their theme. The second component of this year is an “Externally Set Assignment” where students are expected to respond to a chosen theme through a body of work that concludes in a 15 hour controlled examination.

 

The examining body for Photography is AQA, in each year Component 1 has a weighting of 60% and Component 2 40%.
